-
- WHAT IS Brightmail?
-
- Brightmail is a free spam-filtering service from Brightmail Inc. that
- maintains special servers to catch and sideline spam. The Brightmail spam
- filters are continually updated by our anti-spam specialists at the
- Brightmail Logistics and Operations Center (BLOC) who monitor thousands of
- special email accounts looking for spam. When they detect a spam message,
- these specialists create a filter to block it.
-
- When you register with Brightmail, you set up an account that acts as a
- POP proxy to your email account. When you retrieve your email, your
- email software connects to Brightmail, and Brightmail connects to your
- POP server to retrieve messages, filtering them for spam in the process.
- The caught spam is then stored for you so that you can view it when you
- choose.
-
- Brightmail does not store your email password.
-
-
- REQUIREMENTS FOR USING Brightmail
-
- To use Brightmail, you must have:
-
- * An Internet email account that is POP3 compliant and not protected by
- a firewall
- * A dedicated TCP/IP (Internet) network connection or dial-up networking
- through a modem
- * One of the following email applications:
-
- - Eudora Lite or Pro
- - Microsoft Outlook 97/98/2000/Express
- - Netscape Messenger, all versions
- - Other POP3 email software
-
- The following email applications and services currently will not work
- with Brightmail:
-
- - AOL
- - Microsoft Exchange
- - Novell
- - Lotus Notes or cc:mail
-
-
- SETTING UP Brightmail
-
- To use Brightmail, you must register to create an account, and change
- two settings on your local email program to direct your email through
- the Brightmail spam filters.
-
- You can set up your Brightmail account manually using the forms on our
- web site (http://www.brightmail.com/register/), or Windows 95/98 users
- can download and run a setup tool that creates a Brightmail account and
- changes email settings automatically. The setup tool doesnÆt install
- software on your machine, it simply registers an account for you with
- Brightmail and changes two settings on your local email client. In
- addition, it copies the following three items to your computer:
-
- - This README file
- - A log file that records the changes to your email settings
- - An UnInstall utility that when run automatically reverses the changes
- Brightmail makes to your email settings
-
- Before using the setup tool, close all web browsers and mail programs.
- During the setup process, you are prompted to:
-
- 1) Read and accept the Brightmail End User Agreement
- 2) Select the email address that you want to register with Brightmail
- 3) Enter your email password (Brightmail will not store your password)
-
- You follow a similar process if you register with Brightmail using the
- forms on our web site. In addition, our web site contains information on
- changing your local email settings to work with Brightmail
- (http://www.brightmail.com/setup/).
-
-
- READING CAUGHT SPAM
-
- You can read all spam messages that Brightmail has sidelined by
- logging in at http://www.brightmail.com. Enter your email user name
- and password in the appropriate boxes, and click Login. All spam
- that has been filtered from your email account appears.
-
- From here, you can read, delete, or forward caught spam to yourself.
- Caught spam messages are saved in your Brightmail inbox for 30 days,
- and then deleted.
-
- At the beginning of each week, Brightmail sends you a digest listing
- all spam filtered from your legitimate email.
-
- In rare cases, Brightmail will sideline a legitimate email message. You
- can forward the message to your email account by opening the message and
- clicking Send to Me. We at Brightmail would like to know when our filters
- have mistakenly sidelined a legitimate piece of mail. Please copy the
- message header (the top portion of the message that contains routing
- information) and mail it to good@brightmail.com.
-
-
- CONNECTING FOR THE FIRST TIME
-
- If you store a large volume of messages on your email server, retrieving
- your messages the first time after registering with Brightmail may take
- longer than normal. This delay occurs because the first time it filters
- your email, Brightmail will filter all messages, whether new or old.
- Once a message is filtered, it will not be filtered again, so subsequent
- message retrieval times will return to normal.
-
- If you store messages on your POP server, the first time you retrieve
- messages after registering with Brightmail, some messages may be
- duplicated by your POP client. Again, if it happens, message duplication
- will only occur the first time you retrieve your email after registering
- with Brightmail.
-
